What tends to go wrong with retail social media
Retail has a lot to announce but timing easily slips. You forget the announcement on the first day of a sale, you post a restock and it has already sold out, or two staff post the same product on Instagram and X with mismatched text. All of these come from the schedule living only in one person's head.
Another problem is that posts tend to be only announcements. If "New arrivals are in!" and "Sale now on" keep coming, readers see a stream of ads. Pushy posts get "Not interested" pressed more easily, which is a reason to be ranked lower in X's For You.
On top of that, not knowing how much SNS sells weakens the reason to keep going. If you can't see how many people came from a post to your shop, you can't judge whether the effort is worth it.
What to post
In retail, alternating product information with information about the shop and the makers keeps your feed from looking like nothing but announcements.
| Type | Example post topics |
|---|---|
| Announcing products | New arrivals, restocks, seasonal features, limited-quantity notices |
| Showing how to use them | How-to videos, outfit or pairing ideas, tips for choosing a size |
| Explaining why you chose them | Why you stock it, the story of the maker or region, how it differs |
| Behind the scenes | Packing, changing the window display, staff picks |
| Answering questions | Common questions and answers, stock and shipping estimates |
Why you carry this product is information only your shop can write. Even if other shops sell the same product, the reason for choosing it differs shop by shop.
How to run it in SNS TOWN
Book fixed schedules in bulk with CSV
Posts whose dates are decided in advance, such as sales and features, can be loaded with bulk schedule from CSV. Import a CSV with the date and time in the first column, the text in the second and tags in the third, and they are scheduled together. You can read up to 350 rows at a time, and if even one row cannot be read, nothing is imported, so you never end up half-imported.
Count clicks to product pages with short links
When you put a URL in the body of a post you write by hand, "Shorten URL" appears on the compose screen. Pressing it swaps in a short URL with UTM tags (markers that measure which post a visitor came from), and the number of clicks by people appears by day on the post's page. Your shop's own analytics can also separate visitors coming from social media. The thinking is gathered in Measuring results with UTM and short links.
Post the same announcement to two networks
For X and Threads, or Facebook and Instagram, one switch on the compose screen posts to the partner at the same time (Cross-posting). Character limits and image rules differ by network, so check how both look in the compose screen's preview before publishing.
Fill daily posts with AI drafts
For days between sales, place slots in your post cycle and have the AI write drafts. Add the products you want to push this month to "Key messages" and they appear in drafts.
Things to watch out for
Don't make price or quality look better than it is
Japan's Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations prohibits representations that make quality look significantly better than it is (misleading representation of superior quality) and representations that make prices or other terms look significantly better than they are (misleading representation of advantageous terms). For claims about effects or performance, the Consumer Affairs Agency can ask for reasonable supporting evidence, and if it can't be provided the claim is treated as a misleading representation (Consumer Affairs Agency of Japan: overview of representation regulation). If you write "half the usual price", check that you actually sold at that "usual price".
Keep mail-order disclosures on the shop page
Japan's Act on Specified Commercial Transactions requires mail-order ads to show the selling price, shipping cost, timing and method of payment, delivery timing, return conditions, and the seller's name, address and phone number (Consumer Affairs Agency of Japan: mail-order sales). A short social post can't hold all of this, so it is practical to keep posts to the appeal of the product and the announcement, and have people check these terms on the shop page.
Check the prize limits in campaigns
Prize limits differ between a draw that requires a purchase and a draw anyone can enter. See Social media campaigns and Japan's premium rules for details.
Frequently asked questions
I don't have time to take product photos every time
If you build up photos in the Library, the AI picks ones that fit a draft. Noting what is in each photo improves how well it chooses.
I want to post a sale notice three times: the day before, the day of and the last day
The quickest way is to write three rows in a CSV and bulk schedule them. Change the text each time. If similar text keeps repeating, the pre-publish check warns you.
Can I connect to my online store and post stock automatically?
It does not connect to shop inventory. If your shop's news or blog has an RSS feed, Drafts from RSS can make an announcement draft for each new article. Posts go out only after a person approves them.
Where can I see sales from social media?
SNS TOWN shows you up to the number of clicks on short links. For sales, check traffic with UTM tags in your shop's own analytics.
