In a nutshell
A thread is one flow made by connecting your own posts with replies. X's Help describes it as a feature that links related posts from one user to make the context clear or develop a topic (How to create a thread on X).
Differences between X and Threads
| Network | What "thread" means |
|---|---|
| X | A series of posts attached to your own post |
| Threads | A single post is itself called a "thread." You can also link them in a row |
On Meta's Threads, as the service name suggests, a single post is called a thread. The same word points to different things, so when you talk about it in-house, agree on which meaning you use to avoid confusion. The overall picture of Threads is explained in The basics of Threads.
What to watch for in reach
Threads are handy for long explanations, but on X they are built so that the second post and later are less likely to reach people outside your followers. If you read the recommendation system X has published, reply-style posts are easily left out of recommendations. If you write "More in the thread" and stop the story at the first post, most people leave without reading on.
For business accounts, it is safer to write so the first post stands on its own and leave the second and later posts for supplements and details. The reasons, with numbers, are explained in What gets a post into X's recommendations.
When you really can't fit a long explanation in one post, you can also gather the key points in an image, or write the details on a blog or website and link to it. Tips for writing are in How to write posts people read.
In SNS TOWN
On the composer screen for X and Threads, you can press + to link a second and third post and schedule them together. How to link them is explained in Post a thread. On the other hand, for posts going out to X from an AI draft or a post cycle, the pre-post check stops wording that assumes a thread, such as "More in the replies."
