In a nutshell
A shadowban is a name users have for a state where your posts have become hard for others to reach, without you being told. People use it when they can still post and posts still show on followers' screens, but visitors from recommendations and search suddenly dried up.
What the networks officially say
The networks don't use this name itself; they explain it as "conditions for not recommending."
| Network | Official explanation |
|---|---|
| X | Posts that may be abusive or spam are not shown in recommendations (About the X timeline) |
| Sets conditions for posts that aren't eligible for recommendation, and you can check whether your account is affected in "Account Status" (Account Status) |
On Instagram, first open Account Status and check that you haven't been removed from eligibility for recommendations (as of October 2026).
Common causes and how to avoid them
What tends to knock you out of recommendations is behavior that looks like spam: repeating the same text or hashtags, posting in large volumes at short intervals, adding too many unrelated hashtags, and asking for reactions with phrases like "Like this" or "Please share." Watch out, because the more mechanical the operation, the more likely it is to drift into these forms.
On the other hand, not every drop in impressions is a shadowban. Ordinary reasons, such as a trending season having passed or a change in posting times, are more common. Combine the clues in the algorithm with the movement of your own numbers. You can check changes in impressions as daily movement in Analytics. The thinking behind how recommendations are ordered is explained in For You.
In SNS TOWN
For posts written by AI or a post cycle for X, the pre-post check stops, rather than publishes, a post with 2 or more hashtags, a request for reactions, text very similar to a recent post, or one less than 1 hour after the previous post. For posts you wrote yourself and for networks other than X, it shows a warning.
