Who reads it and who it's for are different things
You run an English account for customers overseas, or a staff member living in Japan on a foreign passport handles a Japanese account. In cases like these, the language of the person reading the admin screens differs from the language of the posts going out on social media. In tools with only one language setting, switching the screen to English can make AI drafts English too, or the other way around.
SNS TOWN keeps these two separate from the start.
| Setting | Set per | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Language for posts | Company or brand | AI drafts, auto replies, auto DMs, the notice line for auto replies, campaign winner announcements |
| Screen and email language | Person | Wording of the admin screens, date format, notification emails, help guides |
You can choose English or Japanese, two languages, for now.
Post language is set per company or brand
You choose the "Language for posts" when you add a company or brand, and can change it later in "Settings." Only admins can change it.
This language applies to every case where SNS TOWN writes text on a person's behalf. AI drafts are written in it, and the text of auto replies and auto DMs is in the same language. The one-line notice put into a post with an auto reply ("We'll reply individually to everyone who replies with ..."), the unsubscribe note at the end of an auto DM, and campaign winner announcements are in this language too.
Even when a background job creates drafts in the middle of the night, the language is decided from the company or brand setting, no matter whether anyone has a screen open. You will never see Japanese drafts lined up on an English account because of the language of whoever opened the screen.
When one company has accounts for Japan and for overseas, we recommend splitting them into two companies or brands and choosing a language for each. You can also write the company profile and key messages in each language, so the material the AI refers to and the language it writes in match. How to split them is explained in Keeping Companies and Brands Separate.
The pre-post check looks at both languages
The check right before posting looks at writing patterns in both Japanese and English. Just as a Japanese request for likes gets caught, English phrasing like "like and retweet" or "see the thread" is caught too. This is so that, for a company in either language, text from the other language slipping in is not missed. For what the check covers, see Pre-Post Check.
The X character limit is counted the same way as X counts it, regardless of language. Japanese characters count as 2 and Latin letters as 1, so on a free account the guideline is 140 full-width Japanese characters or 280 half-width English characters. The counting rules are covered in Character Limits and How They Are Counted on Each Network.
Screen and email language is set per person
You choose the screen language when you register, and can switch any time with "Language" in the person menu in the header. The footer of public pages also has an English / Japanese switch. The language you choose is remembered for you, and the next time you log in it opens in that language.
In the English screen, everything after login is in English. That includes the post composer, calendar, analytics, member management, and the text of the help guides. Dates and times also appear in English format, such as "Oct 30 (Thu) 12:00."
Notification emails are written in the language of the recipient's screen. For the same company announcement, a person on an English screen receives English and a person on Japanese receives Japanese. Notices sent to the company's Slack are written not for a person but in the company or brand's "Language for posts" (Notifications).
Notices saved in the background are opened in the viewer's language
Notices about the reason for a failure or about remaining credits are created and saved by background jobs. These messages are designed to be displayed in the language of whoever is viewing, so a person on an English screen is never made to read a notice in Japanese.
On the other hand, things written by people appear in the language they were written in. Post bodies, company names, social account names and bios, and internal notes are not translated.
When languages differ within a team
Because the screen language is per person, people who use an English screen and people who use a Japanese screen can work together in the same company or brand. For example, an overseas marketing person can check posts for a shop in Japan on an English screen, while the shop manager approves on a Japanese screen. The post text stays in the language of the company or brand, so both see the same post from either screen.
Member invitation emails are sent in the language of the inviter's screen. The invited person should switch to their own language after logging in. Invitations and roles are covered in Members and Roles.
Public pages and terms
The SNS TOWN public pages are primarily in English, and the Japanese version lives at addresses starting with /jp. First-time visitors are sent to whichever fits their browser's language setting. The English versions of the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy are translations of the Japanese versions, and if the two disagree, the Japanese version prevails (Terms of Service).
How to use it
- When you register, choose the screen and email language. The same language is also filled in as the "Language for posts" of your first company or brand
- To change the post language, an admin chooses a new "Language for posts" under the company or brand's "Settings"
- To change the screen language, switch "Language" in the person menu in the header
Screenshots of the settings screen are in Company Settings, Export and Deletion.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use languages other than English and Japanese?
For now it is English and Japanese. We will announce other languages when they become available.
Can I mix English and Japanese posts in one company or brand?
Posts you write yourself can be written and published in either language. Text that SNS TOWN writes, such as AI drafts and auto replies, follows the company or brand's "Language for posts." If you want AI to write in both languages, split the company or brand by language.
If I set the screen to English, will AI drafts become English too?
No. AI drafts are written in the company or brand's "Language for posts." The screen language only affects how the screen and email look.
What language do notification emails arrive in?
The language of the recipient's screen. Notices sent to the company's Slack use the company or brand's "Language for posts."
Can I read the help guides in English?
Yes. On an English screen, the text of the help guides appears in English. The screenshots are from the Japanese screen.
