In a nutshell
A follower is a person who has decided to receive your account's posts. The people you follow, in turn, are called "following." Think of followers as a list of your regular customers.
What each network calls them
| Network | What the followed side is called |
|---|---|
| X, Instagram, Threads, TikTok | Followers |
| Facebook Pages | Followers |
| YouTube | Subscribers |
| Followers and connections |
The names differ, but the meaning is the same: the base number of people your posts reach.
What to watch for when running an account
You see the real picture by looking at the follower count together with the number lost, not just the number gained. Even if a campaign brings a jump at once, if many people unfollow afterward, you may not be reaching the people you want to reach. Also, on networks with strong recommendation systems, posts reach beyond your followers. While you have few followers, it is easier to judge how good a post is by watching reach and reaction counts rather than the follower count.
Ways of growing followers such as buying them, or mass-following people to get followed back automatically, may violate each network's rules and also damage your account's credibility. Steady ways to grow are explained in How to gain followers.
The shortcut to gaining followers is to make people think "I want to keep seeing this account's posts." Make it clear what your account is about through your profile and pinned post, and keep posting on that theme. The specific steps are explained in How to gain followers.
In SNS TOWN
Analytics shows the trend of followers for your connected accounts, overlaid with the previous period. On X, the follow and follower check lists new followers, people who unfollowed, and accounts you follow that don't follow back.
