Things that are hard to say in a public reply
"We'll send a discount code to everyone who reposts this post." A promotion like this thanks people for reacting and gives the post a chance to spread. But if you put the discount code or a link in a public reply, people who didn't react can see it too. Trying to send DMs one by one stops being manageable once reactions pass about 50.
A DM (direct message) is a message only you and the other person can read. The term is explained in DM. SNS TOWN's auto DM sends a message you've written, once per person, to people who reacted to a post you chose.
Choose who gets it and what it says
Auto DM works on X. In the settings, you choose which reaction triggers a DM from these three.
| Who it goes to | What triggers it |
|---|---|
| People who reposted | They reposted the post |
| People who liked | They liked the post |
| People who replied | They replied to the post |
For the message, choose either "a fixed text" or "AI writes for each person". With a fixed text, {name} is replaced with the person's display name and {handle} with their username starting with @. Even if everyone gets the same text, you can include their name, as in "Thanks for the repost, {name}". With AI writing for each person, you put instructions on what you want to say in the text field. The message language is the post language set for the company or brand.
One per person, and never to people who replied "stop"
A DM is a heavy kind of message for the person receiving it. When many arrive, they feel like a nuisance and lead to blocks and reports. SNS TOWN builds in protections against sending too much from the start.
The same setting never sends to the same person more than once. One setting picks one type of recipient, so even someone who replied many times gets just one message.
At the end of every message, a line is added automatically: "If you no longer want to receive these DMs, reply 'stop'." If the person replies "stop" or "unsubscribe" (or the Japanese equivalents), they will not be sent DMs from any setting on that X account after that. If your message already includes a "stop" or "STOP" instruction, it isn't added twice. The thinking behind the rules to keep for DMs is summarized in Rules for Replies and DMs.
Daily limit and stop date
In the settings, you can set the number sent per day anywhere from 1 to 1,000. The starting value is 100. On a day when the limit is reached, nothing more is sent and the rest moves to the next day.
If you enter a date and time under "Stop at this date and time", sending stops once that time has passed. For a promotion with a set period, such as "to people who repost by November 30", entering the deadline keeps messages from going to people who reacted after it.
Reactions are checked every hour (every 30 minutes on Enterprise). Up to 20 messages go out per run, sent gradually within the daily limit. Auto DM is available on the Professional and Enterprise plans, and on lower plans you can try it with your monthly credits. Plan differences are on the pricing page.
Start with a post, then just stop it when it's out
An auto DM setting is used linked to the post it targets. After you create the setting, check it and save, you're asked "Create a post to target with this DM?" If you do, the post screen opens, and reactions are counted from the moment that post goes out on X. Scheduling the post works as usual.
After the post has gone out, the contents of the setting can't be changed. Changing the text or recipients midway would make what early recipients got differ from what later ones got. If you want to stop, click "Stop", and messages not yet sent won't go out. A setting can be deleted only after it has been stopped.
Look at the sending log
The setting's page lists the messages. Each shows a status of "Before sending", "Sent", "Failed" or "Not sent", along with the reason for any that weren't sent. Reasons such as not enough credits or a "stop" request tell you what to review in your limits and text. Messages sent to announce campaign winners by DM also appear here.
Before you start, add the X permission
To use auto DM, you need to add the permission to send DMs and the permission to read likes to your connected X account. Click "Add DM permission" on the social accounts screen and approve on X's screen. The owner of the X account must click this themselves.
Step-by-step screens are in the help guide Send Automatic DMs. If you want to respond with a public reply, read auto-reply, and if you're picking winners by lottery, read Create a Campaign as well to see how they combine.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use it on Instagram or Threads?
No. Auto DM works on X only.
If the same person replies many times, will they get many messages?
Only one from a single setting. The same person is never sent a second one.
Can I send a DM for a different promotion to someone who replied "stop"?
Not from the same X account. People who have asked to stop are not sent messages from any setting on that account.
Can I edit the text after the post has gone out?
No. So that those who have been sent a message and those who haven't don't end up with different content, all you can do after it goes out is stop it. If you want to change it, stop it and create a new setting and post.
What happens to DMs that couldn't be sent?
They appear in the sending log as "Failed" with a reason. In cases such as the recipient not accepting DMs, X may not allow the message to be sent.
How many can I send per day?
You can set anywhere from 1 to 1,000 in the settings. The starting value is 100.
