In a nutshell
A quote means sharing the original post while adding your own words. On X it is called a "quote post," and it is described as a feature that adds your own comment, images or GIFs to another user's post and shares it with your followers (X Help). This is where it differs from a repost, which shares without adding anything.
| Repost | Quote | |
|---|---|---|
| Your own words | Not added | Can be added |
| How it shows to your followers | As the original post | As your own post |
| Weight in X's recommendations | 1 | 5 |
When to use it
Quotes suit situations where you want to explain why you are sharing.
- Spread a customer's or partner's post with a word of thanks or an introduction
- Re-publish one of your past posts with the latest information added (restocks, schedule changes and so on)
- Add your company's short take to industry news
In the recommendation system X has published, a quote carries a weight of 5, the same as a reply and heavier than a repost's 1. It helps to think that the more effort a reaction takes, the heavier it counts. The details are in How X's recommendations work.
The words you add can be short. Even a single line like "Thank you for visiting us" shows who shared it and why. On the other hand, if you would only rephrase and repeat the original post, a repost is cleaner.
Things to watch for
A quote is also visible to the owner of the original post. Critical quotes, and using someone's post to make a sales pitch, easily spark backlash. When you quote a customer's post, think about whether they will be comfortable with it, and if you are unsure, ask them first. The thinking is gathered in UGC and handling customers' posts.
In SNS TOWN
On X, the composer screen has a field for the URL of the post to quote. It can go out as a quote post at the scheduled time. The number of quotes is also included in X's analytics export (CSV).
