In a nutshell
On social media, an algorithm is the calculation procedure that decides the order of posts for each viewer. Instead of simply listing posts from people you follow, newest first, it puts what that person is likely to react to near the top.
What it uses as signals
The detailed calculations differ by network, and not everything is made public. Still, the signals each company officially describes have things in common.
| Signal | Examples |
|---|---|
| The viewer's behavior | Posts they liked, replied to or saved before; accounts they often view |
| The content of the post | Topic, whether it has an image or video, wording |
| Reactions to the post | Replies, shares, whether people watched to the end |
| Signs that people don't want to see it | "Not interested," muting, blocking, reporting |
X has published the source code of its recommendation system. In the version SNS TOWN read, replies and shares counted heavily in a post's favor, while mutes and reports counted as large negatives. The details are in How X's recommendations work, and Instagram is covered in Instagram's algorithm.
What to keep in mind when running an account
Rather than looking for ways to "outsmart" the algorithm, it is more reliable to keep publishing posts that people want to react to naturally, because every network is trying to show users what they want to see. On the other hand, repeating requests for reactions or posting the same text many times tends to collect signs that people don't want to see it.
Specifications change without notice. Instead of taking someone's "do this and you'll grow" at face value, it is safer to check against the movement of your own account's engagement. If you change the content and timing of posts little by little and record how reactions differ, you will see what works for your own customers.
In SNS TOWN
The pre-post check picks out "wording likely to count as a negative" from X's published system and warns you before posting. AI-written post drafts also build the same thinking into the AI's instructions.
