In a nutshell
For You is a timeline where the network mixes in posts from accounts you don't follow and lines up what it has chosen. On X it is the "For you" tab, and on TikTok it is the "For You" feed.
How it differs from Following
X's Help explains that the home timeline has two tabs, "For you" and "Following." For you includes posts from accounts you don't follow, and X says it does not show posts that may be abusive or spam in For you (About the X timeline, as of October 2026).
| Following | For you | |
|---|---|---|
| Posts shown | Only people you follow | Includes people you don't follow |
| Order | Mainly newest first | The order the network picks |
| Who it reaches | Your current followers | People who don't know you yet |
TikTok explains that its recommendations are decided by viewer behavior (likes, whether they watched to the end, shares and so on), video information, and device and account settings, and that the follower count itself is not a direct factor (How TikTok recommends videos #ForYou).
What to keep in mind when running an account
When a post gets into For You, it can be shown to many times the number of your followers. At the same time, first-time viewers don't know the background. Inside jokes and "continued from yesterday" don't come across, and a post that is complete on its own works better. People who arrive from For You often open your profile and decide whether to follow, so it also matters to get your profile and pinned post in order. How ranking works is explained in Algorithm, and the specific weights of X's recommendations in How X's recommendations work.
In SNS TOWN
The pre-post check warns you before posting about wording that tends to count as a negative in X's For you, such as requests for reactions or openings that assume a thread. You can confirm how far a post reached in the impressions in Analytics.
