In a nutshell
Stories are vertical posts that disappear 24 hours after publishing. On Instagram, a colored ring appears around the profile photo, and followers tap the circles lined up at the top of the screen to watch them in order. Facebook has a feature with the same name.
How they differ from feed posts
| Feed post | Stories | |
|---|---|---|
| How long it's visible | Stays until you delete it | 24 hours |
| Lined up on your profile | Yes | No (can be kept in Highlights) |
| Good for | Things you want seen for a long time | Topics for today only |
Instagram's Help explains that you can keep expired Stories on your profile by adding them to a Highlight (Story Highlights, as of October 2026). If you gather your menu, directions, frequently asked questions and so on into Highlights, they act as a guide for people seeing your profile for the first time.
How to use them
Stories skew toward viewers who are already following you. It is easier to divide the work if you think of Reels and feed posts as the doorway for new customers, and Stories as a place to get closer to your regulars. Topics you can put out without polishing fit well, such as today's recommendation, availability on a rainy day, or a look at preparations.
Just because they disappear doesn't mean you can post anything. If someone saves the screen, it remains, and it is still a statement from your official account. For operating rules, see How to write social media policies and guidelines. You don't need to post every day, but if you keep up the days you decide to post, it is easier for people to form the habit of watching.
In SNS TOWN
SNS TOWN doesn't currently support scheduling or posting Stories. Feed posts, Reels and carousels can be made on the composer screen. You can divide the work this way: post Stories from the smartphone app, and prepare feed posts in batches with scheduled posts.
